Santa Catalina Island was purchased in 1919 by William Wrigley Jr., owner of the Chicago Cubs, who developed it as a popular tourist destination. From 1921 until 1951 the Chicago Cubs also would spend about a month on the island each year, staying at the historic Hotel St. Catherine and holding Spring Training at a field now known as "Cubs Park."
